SEO is the abbreviation for Search Engine Optimisation. An ad is listed at the top of the search page. However, we have to pay a certain amount to Google for listing our ads. Whenever we type a search query on google search page, we immediately (depending on the internet speed) get few results, for example if we type “what is seo?” we get the following results.

If we see carefully, beside the longtailpro website we see “Ad” in bold letters. It symbolizes that the first website is an ad by google. While moz.com is second on the list. According to the digital marketing concepts moz.com is ranked at no.1 position. Basically, the content on the website is optimized and better than other websites. Similarly, basis their content and SEO rules, different websites are ranked on the first, second and hundredth page.

For example, in the following image, we can see the number of pages related to our particular search query. Here we can see more than 25 billion results for the particular search query.

What do search engines search?

Let’s wait for a second and understand what exactly is happening when we type our search query. Goggle or any search engine for that matter has a crawler that literally crawls on various websites and gathers a huge amount of information on the internet. Also, this crawler brings all the 1s as well as the 0s back to our search engine and builds an index. The search engine then uses an algorithm and the data is fed to the index. When we type our search query, all the data on the index that matches our keyword is listed on various pages.

While optimizing our websites we must give more weight-age to our keywords and try and optimize our website for a particular keyword. Let us understand keywords in detail, as this will help us understand the basics of SEO.

Keywords in SEO

Keywords as the name suggests are the important words. These words can be further divided into long-tail keywords and short-tail keywords. As their name suggests, short-tail keywords are short and include a maximum of two or three words for example “What is SEO?” The long-tail keywords generally include more than 3 words, for example, “how to cook vegetable paneer biryani at home?” While optimizing our blog and website we must always plan our keywords and accordingly optimize our blog based on our keywords.

The most important aspect of SEO is the keyword. The keyword is basically the search query we type on the google search page. The process of searching for something on google starts with typing the query and ends with results within a fraction of seconds. In this fraction of seconds, google reads the query in its format and matches the keywords in different websites, and then lists the results. The optimized websites are seen on the first page. In the above image, the query or the keyword is “what is digital marketing” and disruptiveadvertising.com is the website that ranks first for this particular keyword.

In SEO, keyword planning plays a very critical role, as the websites are ranked on the basis of the keywords. For example in the above search queries we have seen that moz.com ranks on the top for the keyword “what is seo?”, and disruptiveadvertising.com ranks first for the keyword “what is digital marketing”. Hence, it is very important to choose the correct keyword.

How can we do SEO quickly?

Trust me SEO cannot be done quickly over a time of two or three days or even a week. It is a gradual process and it may take several months or sometimes even years to get ranked on the first page of the search engine. It is a slow process, and we need to follow certain steps to bring organic traffic to our website. SEO is basically divided into two types of SEO, On-Page SEO, and Off-Page SEO. On-Page SEO by the name means that certain rules have to be followed to create content and optimize the different pages on our website. We can install few plugins on our website for better on-page optimization of our website.

Off-page SEO as the name suggests has nothing to do with content on our website. It mainly includes the linkage and appearance of our website link on other websites, for example forums or news articles or other blogs. The process of putting our website links on other websites is known as back-linking. It is very helpful for our websites if it is linked with some popular websites. The most effective way of back-linking is posting on relevant forums.
